I spent 7 years working in West Malaysia, often travelling between Singapore and Selangor, Perak and Penang, working for an Australian company that supplies feeds, supplements and medication for animals and fishes. I was very lucky to meet people like my horse owner customers, who organized many of these “hunting” trips for me when I talked and asked about Aros – the Golden Aros.

As people were always talking about Pahang Gold, I told myself that I must find this fish. So, I spent lots of time in Pahang looking for the Pahang Gold Aro.
Lake Bera is a very well-known area for Pahang Gold, but unfortunately, I didn’t see any Pahang Gold there. I only found Green Aros in Pahang.

However, I found Pahang Gold around the Bukit Merah Lake area. In fact, during my search, I came across some Full Gold Crossbacks. They were found in a river in the South West of Bukit Merah Lake.

I then confirmed what my dad’s brother told me before…
There were primarily 2 types of Gold Aros (Kim Leng) – those that come from Indonesia and Malaysia. Gold colour (Kim) had always been associated with the Emperor – only the Emperor can wear Gold colour in the olden days. In the late 70s, the King of Malaysia or Sultan was from Pahang and thus the Gold Aros from Malaysia were called Pahang Gold, even though they are not found in Pahang, but Perak. The name, Pahang Gold, is to differentiate the Gold Aros from Malaysa and Indonesia.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong
All Kim Leng from Malaysia are called Pahang Gold, irrespective of their base colours. Those that are entirely gold are from the Sungai Gedong area, South West of the Bukit Merah Lake.
The Pahang Gold was later renamed Malaysian Gold and today it is known as Crossback Golden.
